Introduces Ernest Blake as a great composer; wants to know when his book of complete poetry will be published because she thinks that the purpose and happiness in life is self expression which he is truely capable off; will send out her proof on Saturday, asks not to mention anything personal his preface, except date of birth because she is so ashamed of the whole book; invites him to come visit in England.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
